This post was inspired by my dad (minds out of the gutter peeps!). After reading yesterday’s post…
…he commented to me that people must think I LOOK like I eat A LOT of food. Here’s the truth. I don’t. I also don’t believe in counting calories, or in relying on the number on a scale to tell me whether or not I’m healthy or in shape. Scales are the devil. Stay off them.
The proof is in the pudding right? Here’s a cheesy picture I took of myself two days ago.
Here’s the deal. When you consume quality, nutrient rich, real, clean food, you can eat to your hearts content! That’s why I LOVE the paleo diet! It covers all these bases. Of course weight gain and weight loss are pretty simple formulas. Take in more calories than you burn, you’ll gain weight. Eating fewer calories and burning more results in weight loss. The secret is not all calories are created equal. What’s most important is the QUALITY of the calories you consume. When you eat right and fuel your body the way it was meant to be fueled (notice I’m saying fuel, not feed) your weight will naturally stabilize. Eating the right fuel keeps your metabolism running correctly, which will regulate all those wonderful little chemical reactions and hormones in your body and those annoying little (ok sometimes INTENSE) cravings for things like sugar (that’s my biggie) will subside and eventually go away. It also naturally will regulate your appetite (resulting in automatic portion control). Many people refuse to fuel their precious automobiles with anything less than premium gas. Why wouldn’t you treat your body with at least as much respect as your car?!?! My car gets regular by the way. I save the premium for my bod.
I’ve always been on the small side so the switch to a paleo lifestyle for me was about feeling better and taking better care of my body. It wasn’t an effort in weight loss. I have always been a fairly healthy eater with a huge appetite, but with my activity levels I wasn’t consuming enough carbs to keep my body running right. I know this because I felt like ass most of the time, and I do have a nutrition/dietetics background so I realize exactly what I was doing to myself (starving basically). I’ve incorporated paleo approved carbs AND more fats. Let me tell you, these changes alone have had significant positive effects. I can’t remember ever feeling as good as I have since I’ve made the switch. Here are the biggest changes I’ve noticed:
-I don’t need caffeine to give me energy.
-I’m sleeping like a baby. Sleep rocks. I’ve always sucked at it. Not anymore!
-I used to be addicted to candy and had a mean ass sweet tooth. Atomic fireballs were my poison. Bye bye fireballs. My sweet tooth is mostly gone now and I don’t need sugary treats to quench it. A square of good quality dark chocolate does the trick.
-My mood swings are gone. No more cranky biatch over here.
-I’ve been kicking ass at the gym, totally rocking my workouts. I feel so strong!
In terms of my weight, I’ve gained a few pounds but I’m pretty sure it’s all muscle since I have been able to go aggro at the gym thanks to paleo eating. My clothes fit about the same and I notice a lot more muscle tone all over. I should also mention I needed to gain a few pounds. This is a good example of what I noted above. When you fuel your body in a positive way, your weight will stabilize naturally and healthfully. Is healthfully a word?
I have an admission to make. I’m still struggling with a major vice, sugarfree chewing gum. I’m a hardcore addict. And yes I buy my gum Costco.
